High Agency Engineers Who Love Building But Hate Testing
The best engineers are high agency builders who ship fast and break things. But when testing feels like a chore, bugs slip through. Here's why the engineers who move fastest often ship the most bugs—and what to do about it.

You know the type. They're the engineers who get things done. Give them a problem and they'll have a working solution by end of day. They don't wait for perfect specs. They don't get blocked by ambiguity. They build, ship, iterate. They're high agency, and every startup wants them.
There's just one problem: they hate testing. And that means they ship bugs. A lot of them.
The Builder's Mindset
High agency engineers are wired for creation. They get a dopamine hit from seeing something work for the first time. The moment the feature loads, the API returns data, the button does what it's supposed to—that's the reward. That's what they live for.
Testing is the opposite of that feeling. Testing is checking if the thing you already built still works. It's clicking through the same flows you just implemented. It's logging into different accounts to verify edge cases. It's tedious, repetitive, and—let's be honest—boring.
So what happens? The high agency engineer gets the feature working, does a quick sanity check, and ships it. On to the next thing. There are more problems to solve, more features to build. Testing can wait. Or someone else can do it. Or maybe it'll just be fine.
The Bug Factory
Except it's not fine. The bugs pile up:
- The happy path works, edge cases don't. The feature works perfectly for the demo. But what about users with empty states? Users on mobile? Users who hit the back button at the wrong time?
- Regressions slip through. The new feature works, but it broke something else. Nobody noticed because nobody tested the old flows.
- Permission bugs everywhere. Admin features leak to regular users. Free tier users access paid features. Nobody tested the permission matrix.
- Error states are broken. Everything works when the API responds. But when it fails? Blank screens, cryptic errors, infinite spinners.
The irony is painful. The same engineer who shipped the feature in record time now spends twice as long fixing the bugs that users found. The velocity that made them valuable gets eaten up by firefighting.
Why "Just Write Tests" Doesn't Work
The obvious solution is to tell these engineers to write more tests. Add it to the PR checklist. Require test coverage. Make it part of the definition of done.
This doesn't work, and here's why:
- Unit tests don't catch UI bugs. You can have 100% code coverage and still ship a broken user experience. The button works in isolation but breaks in context.
- E2E tests are a maintenance nightmare. Traditional end-to-end tests are brittle, slow, and constantly breaking. High agency engineers especially hate maintaining them.
- The real testing is manual anyway. Even with automated tests, someone still needs to actually use the feature. Log in as different users. Try the edge cases. See if it feels right.
You can't process your way out of this. The fundamental problem is that thorough testing requires a different mindset than building—and high agency engineers are optimized for building.
The Cost of Shipped Bugs
Let's be real about what these bugs actually cost:
- User trust erodes. Every bug a user encounters makes them trust your product less. Enough bugs and they start looking for alternatives.
- Support load increases. Bugs generate tickets. Tickets take time to triage, reproduce, and respond to. That's time not spent building.
- Context switching kills productivity. Getting pulled off new work to fix a bug from last week is brutal. You have to reload all the context, remember what you were thinking, figure out what went wrong.
- Hotfixes are risky. Rushing to fix a production bug often introduces new bugs. The pressure to ship fast is exactly what caused the problem in the first place.
A bug caught before shipping costs minutes to fix. A bug caught in production costs hours—plus the user impact, the support overhead, and the reputation damage.
The Real Problem: Testing Doesn't Scale
Here's the uncomfortable truth: as your product grows, the testing burden grows faster. Every new feature adds more scenarios to test. Every new user type adds another dimension. Every new integration adds more potential failure modes.
A high agency engineer can build features faster than they can test them. The math doesn't work. Either you slow down development (which defeats the purpose of hiring high agency people) or you accept that bugs will ship (which defeats the purpose of building software).
This is why so many fast-moving teams eventually hit a wall. The bug debt accumulates until the product feels unreliable. Users complain. The team spends more time fixing than building. The high agency engineers get frustrated and leave.
What Actually Works: Automated Agentic Testing
The solution isn't to change the engineers. It's to change the testing.
High agency engineers are great at describing what should work. They understand the requirements, the edge cases, the user flows. What they hate is the manual execution—clicking through scenarios, managing test accounts, documenting results.
What if they could just describe the tests and have them run automatically?
- "Test the checkout flow as a new user, then as a returning user with saved payment methods"
- "Verify that free users can't access premium features"
- "Check that the dashboard loads correctly with 0 items, 10 items, and 1000 items"
- "Make sure error messages appear when the API fails"

Keeping the Agency, Losing the Bugs
The goal is to let high agency engineers stay high agency. Let them build fast. Let them ship often. But give them a safety net that catches the bugs they're too impatient to find themselves.

- Build the feature. Do what you do best. Get it working.
- Describe the test scenarios. Takes five minutes. You already know what should work.
- Let the agent test. It handles the account switching, the edge cases, the tedious clicking.
- Review the results. See what passed, what failed, and why. Fix issues before they ship.
The engineer stays in builder mode. The testing happens anyway. Bugs get caught before users find them.
The New Definition of High Agency
High agency used to mean "ships fast." Now it means "ships fast and ships correctly." The engineers who figure out how to maintain velocity while maintaining quality are the ones who will thrive.
